Elizabeth House Food Hub: Reading Network Book Box

According to the Trussell Trust, a "record 1.9m food bank parcels [were] given to people in the past year," and there was “ a 47% increase in the number of three-day emergency food parcels it distributed in the 6 months from March to September 2020, compared to the same period in 2019. It noted a particularly marked increase in the number of food parcels going to children.”

This year has been tough on a lot of families, and The Reading Network really wanted to find a way to help out.

So we decided to try creating a box which we could leave at one of the local Islington Food Banks filled with high quality children’s books from our wonderful collection of donations from all of you! Amy made a beautiful box, cleaned and organised the books and took it over to the Elizabeth House Food Bank in time for half term.

So far, this has been a real success. People have been able to take a book or two home for their children to enjoy, and the box has already needed three refills!

We are so happy that the books are getting new homes, and we really hope that they are bringing a little extra light into children’s lives at this tough time.

Please get in touch with us if you know of any organisation who would benefit from the donations or if you would like to donate your own pre-loved books!
